The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” is an incredible story written by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer and  illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. This story is about a boy named William who lived in a small village in Malawi, his village struggled with food, water, electricity and money. William was a very curious young boy who wanted to help his village and his parents. One day William went to a library that was built by an American Help foundation. He found a book that showed him a wind turbine and he wanted to build one to generate electricity. He went to the junkyard and got pieces to build his wind turbine, after many days of build it was finished. This boy had harnessed the wind. My first connection with this story is Williams curiosity on how a car engine works. Like William I was very curious on how a car engine works and how it spins the wheels. My second connection was a text to media, I have watched the movie of the boy who harnessed the wind and have seen the full story of Williams incredible adventure from a young curious boy from Malawi to a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the US.

After The Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again

“After The Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” is a heart-warming story about Humpty Dumpty’s big fall. Humpty Dumpty loved birds, so he climbed the wall to watch the birds but he fell off the wall. After the fall Humpty Dumpty was terrified of heights. This stopped him from enjoying many things in life. So to be able to watch the birds Humpty Dumpty made an airplane but his airplane got stuck up on the wall, so Humpty Dumpty went up to retrieve it but the higher up he went the more scared he got but once Humpty Dumpty reached the top he wasn’t scared anymore. There are many connections I made with this story, the first one was a text to world. My preschool was called Humpty Dumpty Nursery and we were told the Humpty Dumpty story all the time. Another connection I made was a text to text, when I was young the first poem I learned to read was Humpty Dumpty. All in all this is a great story about overcoming fears and not letting bad things bring you down.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colours and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract

“The Noisy Paint Box: The Colours and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract” is a fantastic story written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary Grandpre. This is a story about a boy named Kandinsky, his aunt gives him a paint box but with this paint box Kandinsky uncovers a huge part of his life. As he starts to paint he realizes he can hear colours and can match them with musical notes. A connection I made to this story was a text to text when I read a book about Albert Einstein, Einstein is credited as the father of modern physics just as Kandinsky is credited as the father of abstract art. There are many similarities between Einstein and Kandinsky, both of them were important to there respective subjects and both were thought to be wrong for example, Kandinsky’s art was though to be inferior or mediocre and Einstein was thought to be crazy and a madman. But both were essential people for there subjects.

There

“There” is a thought provoking story written and illustrated by Marie-Louise-Fitzpatrick about a child that is curious about the future. The child starts wonder where there is what is there. The child also wants to know how he will know he is there. He also wants to know how long it will take to get there and will he stop being silly at there? He wants to know if he will make it through there. Is everybody going there? There are many connections I made to this story but the most important connection was a text to self and it was my curious to adulthood, just the same as the child in the story. We are both curious about how adulthood will feel and what it will be like. Another connection I made was a text to media, it was from a movie I had watched where the main character didn’t want to grow up just like the character in the story said ” I will go there tomorrow”

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa

“Wangari’s Trees of Peace” is an incredible true story that is written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter  talks about a woman named Wangari. Wangari was excellent in school, she was so good she got a scholarship to a university in the US and she was the first woman in East Africa to get a PhD. But when Wangari she saw how many tree were being chopped down she realized that there is something that needs to be done. Wangari and a group of woman started to plant trees. She says to the woman “We are planting the seeds of hope” The government men laughed “Woman can’t plant trees” they said. Soon more and more woman join Wangari and plant more and more trees. The government men put her in jail. Soon 30 million trees are planted and Kenya has returned back to its fertile land. The world has heard of Wangari’s tree planting army and in 2004 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I think this is a great story that I have connected to, the connection I made was when I started to play basketball and I wondered how  I will ever be good and I learned that I need to take it step by step just like Wangari. All in all this story teachs children that everything takes time and every little this becomes big.

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

“The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau” is an incredible adventure story about Jacques Cousteau and his undersea adventures. The story is about Jacques Cousteau and how he grew up as a very weak boy and doctors encouraged him to swim to build up strength, that helped him discover how much he loves the water. Jacques also loved to think and build all sorts of things. When Jacques was a young adult he was badly hurt in a car accident. Doctors told him he would have to wear a arm brace for the rest o this life, Jacques could not accept this so he turned to the water for strength and swam everyday. A friend gave him goggles and it changed his life. Cousteau was trying to figure out a way to make diving suits better and that allowed for longer diving times. Finally Cousteau and his engineer friend Emile Gagnan created a breathing apparatus they called the Aqua-Lung. It was the first machine to let someone stay underwater for long periods of time. Cousteau wanted to open the minds of everyone to the beauty of the sea, so he made an airtight cover for his camera so it could go underwater. Cousteau also bought a boat and made it his own floating lab. Cousteau also made the worlds first full length and full color film of the beauty of the sea. It was called the “Silent World”. Cousteau tried to colonize the sea but his attempt was futile. He was in many ways the world ambassador of the ocean. The story of Jacques Cousteau triggers many connections, the biggest connection I made with the story of Jacques Cousteau was a autobiography that I read about Elon Musk and his incredible desire to reach Mars, it reminded me of the same way Cousteau loved the ocean. Another connection I made was with Nikola Tesla and how he is a major part of how we view electricity, and Cousteau is also a big part of how we view the ocean today.

Enemy Pie

“Enemy Pie” is a great book written and illustrated Derek Munson by  that simulates a young child’s life very well. The story starts when a boy named Jeremy Ross moves into the neighborhood and Jeremy laughs at the boy when he fouls him out in baseball and the boy decides that Jeremy is his number one enemy. The boy now goes to his dad and asks him for advice on how to get rid of his enemy. The boys father goes into his a drawer and pulls out an old recipe page and says “Enemy Pie” pauses ” This pie will get rid of any enemy” The boys dad gets started on the enemy pie but he say ” For the enemy pie to work you need to spend a day with your enemy” after spending a day with Jeremy the boy trys to tell his dad not to use the enemy pie because he had such a fun day with his enemy but his dad thinks he is pretending. After his dad puts the pie down he realizes its a normal pie. But at least the enemy pie did get rid of his enemy by turning him into a friend. There are a lot of connections that I made to this story but I made three strong ones. The first connection I made was that I have had an enemy before, I disliked this person because I had never made an effort to know them. The second connection I made was I asked my dad what to do about the person I disliked just like what the boy did. The final connection was a text to text connection I read in a book named Enders Game that the best way to get rid of your enemy is to turn them into a friend.  All in all this is a great book that has a lot of potential connections.

Sir. Circumference + The Dragon of Pi: A Math Adventure

“Sir. Circumference + The Dragon of Pi: A Math Adventure” is a funny, educational book about the number Pi. written by Cindy Neuschwander and illustrated by Wayne Geehan . The story starts when Sir. Circumference feels sick and drinks a potion that turned him into a gigantic, fire-breathing dragon. Now that Sir. Circumference was a dragon the other knights went to kill him but they didn’t know who the dragon was. Now it was up to his son Radius to save him, Radius ran into the castle and found his mother Lady Di of ameter. He told his mother what happened. With the help of his mother Radius ran back to the doctors room and looked for something to help his father, after looking for some time he found the Circle’s Measure it says ” Measure the middle and the circle around, divide so a number can be found. Every circle great or small, the number is the same for all. It’s also the dose, so be clever or a dragon he will stay forever. Radius went to get the help of Geo of Metry. He showed Radius the new wheel he had made. Then he ran through the kitchen and helped Lady Fingers finish her pie and he realized that it took a 3rd and little bit to cover the rim of  the pie. He took another piece folded it in half but half was too long folded in quarters but it was also too long then folded again the eighth almost fit. So he left. He measured the distance across a wheel and around and found out that the distance was 3 and 1/7. He went back to the doctors room and found the medicine, he reread the poem to make sure and fell asleep while he was reading the poem. He ran to his father and the knights we already there quickly he feed his the potion before the knights killed him and it turned him back. They all celebrated this discovery by eating pie. I think that the theme of the book is education. This is a lovely book that educates children while keeping it light hearted and fun.

Kindness#5

For my fifth kindness me and my sister made cookies for my family, I felt awesome because of how happy my mom was. My mom was so happy I made cookies and my dad was impressed by how good the cookies were. My younger sister was so excited for the cookies and the frosting on top of it.

Kindness#4

For my forth kindness I gave my sister money to buy candy. I felt very happy that I gave my sister the money because my sister was  wistful that she didn’t have any coins to buy the candy. I think my sister was very happy to buy Lego shaped gummies.
